ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the development of Longford Women’s Link (LWL), an Irish center for women’s empowerment, community engagement and education. Although Irish society is in transition, most recently referenced by the shift toward abortion rights at the very tail end of such ideological battles in Europe, there are extant imbalances in power and gender equity, which require a fundamental shift in the way that education is both presented to and utilized by women. The findings from LWL can extend to other global sites affected by gender imbalances in education at the adult level. Community education as praxis works especially well for female learners who have typically suffered from structural challenges and normative systems of hegemonic masculine education. The way in which community development is situated and its impact on structural norms in Ireland, under the leadership of Louise Lovett, who is the protagonist featured in this chapter, is connected to the Sustainable Development Goals and their broad application.
