ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on places that encourage local residents to meet and, hopefully, interact. It guides us different ways community facilities and services can be provided. In Riverside and Letchworth, the emphasis is on the provision of community-serving facilities. The Columbia Association will endeavor to promote community in the sense that Columbia is a community whose members are aware of Columbia's purposes, are concerned for the welfare of each other as members of the community, welcome diversity of life styles and beliefs, deal constructively with conflict, and assume responsibility for the actions of the group. The Columbia Association distributes information about the history of the community and the purposes and responsibilities of membership. The close physical setting makes social contact inevitable; for residents who are less community minded, such closeness may produce conflict. Lake Claire Cohousing is a case where the functionality and appearance of the setting and the selection, organization, and programming of residents are given equal weight.
