ABSTRACT

Joe Flaherty attended a town-sponsored public lecture presented by the author on the subject of conservation design, as outreach from the Center for Rural Massachusetts. In a rural district with one-acre zoning, Hunter's Pointe's 45 lots average 24,000 square feet and vary in width from 120 to 150 feet. Protected open space is visible from about one-third of the street network, which abuts conservation land on one side, adding to the rural feel. The rural character of Indian Walk is enhanced by its sensitive street design. The Ponds at Woodward in rural Kennett Township is one of Pennsylvania's best examples of a conservation subdivision that protects working farm-land—in this case, an apple and peach orchar. Paternal Gift Farm, an attractive 123-acre farm property in the rolling uplands of western Howard County, is located approximately 25 miles from Baltimore, 35 miles from Annapolis, and 25 miles from Washington, D.C., between state routes 108 and 216.
