ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the connection between disability and transportation equity. It also discusses the relationship between aging and increasing disability levels, age as a transportation equity issue. Transportation mobility is important because it widens the geographic horizon of people employment, housing, shopping, and recreation opportunities. The many different human services transportation providers created overlapping services, resulting in a high cost of offering transportation by providers other than public transit. Department of Transportation and Health and Human Services are both interested in, and take responsibility for, assisting transportation services for persons who are disadvantaged in terms of their ability to obtain and use their own transportation. Government investment in paratransit has provided many of the transportation options available to the disabled and seniors. In the United States, the number of people experiencing transportation problems is growing, in part due to the graying of the Anglo population.
