ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews major demographic trends, including population growth and changes in density, and how ethnicity will change—in some regions and areas, dramatically. Indeed, Japan's population is expected to fall from a peak of 128 million in 2005 to 105 million by mid-century, or just about its population at the end of World War II. The dependency ratio is growing in the United States (US), as would be expected with an aging population. Between 2010 and 2040, the entire US population will increase from 310 million to 407 million. Between 2010 and 2040, the entire US population will increase from 310 million to 407 million. Megapolitan clusters and megapolitan areas will account for more than about 70 percent of the nation's growth between 2010 and 2040, with their share of the total population rising from less than 65 percent in 2010 to about 66 percent in 2040.
