ABSTRACT

Analysis is the heart and brain of the city planning process. It is essential to the primary purpose of applying reason in the conduct of municipal affairs. It is the means of evaluating the condition of the community, simulating its functioning, projecting important developments within the city and its external environment, reaching conclusions concerning what can and should be done, and determining how this should be accomplished. Observations are the most basic and universal method of analysis, whether obtained directly through one’s own senses or indirectly from data representing the reaction of others. Graphical abstractions are means of exploring and explaining situations, relationships, or thoughts as they are conceived for the first time, formulated, and developed, either as a working clarification for the creator or as an exposition for others. They are executed in a flexible medium permitting immediate change, repeated modification, and rapid reformulation.
