ABSTRACT

The most successful community would be that which contributed the most by its physical form, its institutions, and its operation to the growth of people. Local organizations offer opportunities for people to come together and work on matters of common concern. They make it possible for a group to speak with a single voice. Communities of like-minded residents are likely to create the organizations by themselves with little or no outside support, although preestablished organizations will help speed up the community- building process. By "reading" the landscape, people are reminded of memories that they share and that bind them together as a community. Individuals are most likely to participate in a community if it is in their self-interest to do so–especially if the value and quality of their homes are directly affected by changes in the neighborhood.
