ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews methods and instruments for participatory decision making at the site-specific design scale and architectural form scale. The rationale and objectives of community design methods at the site-specific scale and architectural form scale are not different from those associated with large-scale planning. At the site-specific scale and architectural scale, the product may be a specific site design or a few alternative design proposals for a building. The leading group contacting the community designer for projects at the site-specific scale often will have close contact with either the end users of the project or individuals highly knowledgeable about project requirements. To understand end users' needs and develop a program for the site or the building, in-depth interviews and wish poems are advisable. Once the program needs are identified and prioritized, a community or group activity should be undertaken to develop conceptual diagrams and design concepts.
