ABSTRACT

A community design project is initiated when an entity or person — a department of local government, an organization, a community member — identifies a problem area affecting the community and requests help in resolving it. The community designer needs to develop a project timeline at the outset, in consultation with the parties initiating the project. These measures, which occur in advance of any designing or planning, is the structural elements of the participatory framework within which the project will move toward its goals. Project participants potentially include anyone who is likely to be affected by the outcome of the project. It is the community designer's responsibility to make sure all such parties are contacted and invited to participate. The chapter explains key tasks and points involved in project timeline development. It describes the key points in identification of individuals who should participate in the process, and outreach — the process of contacting those individuals and recruiting their participation.
