ABSTRACT

Over the years, community designers have developed a variety of formats, methods, and instruments with which to gather input from people in community design processes. Through exploration and experience, methods and instruments have been fine-tuned, and the opportunities and constraints of different activity formats have become apparent. This chapter reviews this toolkit and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of its use in different contexts and in different stages of the design process. Once the preliminary exploration of the site has been completed, the community designer needs to select methods for goal setting. A relatively simple method used for goal setting is to ask community members what they like and dislike about the existing conditions of the project area. Instruments for conducting a likes and dislikes analysis are fairly simple. Often sheets of paper with the likes and dislikes questions and blank spaces for participants to write down answers are sufficient.
