ABSTRACT

Deep Travel time changes-the "Longer Nows" summoned by Deep Travel-are adjustable and have their own special uses and applications. The Longer Nows can, for instance, slow down an exceptional moment almost indefinitely-to the point where it leaves an indelible impression that later becomes a vivid and imperishable memory. It's one thing to start seeing the earth as a "larger here," a place whose "whole earth" needs have to be addressed in a unified way—that's the what of the matter. "A new time perspective," then, was the other big post-"Earthrise" breakthrough. "Earth," E. O. Wilson suggests, "unlike the other solar planets, is not in physical equilibrium. Maybe an ability to join Deep Nows around us that are already in progress is something that can grow only in stages, and our "feeble sense of time," as E. O. Wilson calls it, is a faculty in training and still undergoing reconstruction and expansion.
