ABSTRACT

One of the most inspiring regional trail projects to be launched over the past decade is the Carolina Thread Trail, an initiative to encourage 15 counties in the south-central piedmont of North Carolina and north-central South Carolina to participate in the creation of a 1,500-mile interconnected regional trail and greenway system. As of early 2013, the design and construction phases of more than 10 miles of Little Sugar Creek greenway had been completed. Little Sugar Creek Greenway is part of a much larger regional greenway system created and operated by Mecklenburg County, which currently operates more than 37 miles of trails. The Hawksbill Greenway project in Luray, Virginia, began in 1999 when the town's parks and recreation director and Page County Tree Board member Ken Beyer attended a greenway and trails conference organized by the Virginia Department of Forestry.
