ABSTRACT

The typical single-family home is no longer equipped with a one-car garage or an uncovered parking space; two spaces or garages are provided. The dimensions for on-street angle parking are somewhat more involved than are those for parallel parking, because they depend on the assumed length, width, and turning circle of the cars being parked. When designing a parking area, consideration should be given to both the size of vehicles to be accommodated and the type of clientele that is to be served. If a city chooses to develop surface parking lots in its central business district, it may transform the character of the area into something like low-density, suburban shopping centers. Determining how much off-street parking is reasonable to require for each type of land use takes good judgment, and should be based on careful studies of local needs and trends in automobile ownership and usage.
