ABSTRACT

Wastewater that is originated in a house in an urban area would leave the site by means of a house lateral and flow into the street main; it would flow into a branch trunk sewer, then through the interceptor to the wastewater treatment plant. The term "wastewater management" has come into common usage only in fairly recent times; the term "sewage disposal" was generally used. The amount of domestic wastewater that is produced in an area depends upon how much water is supplied to the area, and what proportion of that water finds its way into the sewerage system. Some consideration is being given to the use of a vacuum pipe system, in which the wastewater is sucked by pumps into the treatment plant. The amount of industrial wastewater produced depends very largely on the type of industry in the area and the water demand for each.
