ABSTRACT

The Wildwood story involves city design and planning issues that have acquired political visibility and are covered by newspapers and magazines: Community, Livability, Mobility, Equity, and Sustainability. There are business and academic critics of planning and city design who say that the right way to solve all urban and suburban development problems is to allow the real-estate market to operate freely. People who belong to community groups have gone on from influencing their local planning and urban design agendas to the politics of regional planning, particularly the preservation of the natural landscape. Community participation in planning was once an exciting innovation. Planning had traditionally been left to experts working "outside of politics;" letting citizen representatives participate in meetings while a plan was being drawn was a big concession. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
