ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces some basic elements of elementary and secondary educational facility space needs assessment for use in comprehensive plans. Educational facilities include publicly and privately operated day-care centers, nursery schools, kindergartens, elementary schools, secondary schools, technical schools, junior and senior colleges, and universities. If charter schools are becoming a significant local educational option, and if their land-use and facility needs are significantly different from main-line schools, then perhaps a new land-use category for educational facilities may need to be added by the user. For many other kinds of educational facilities, there are few and even unclear relationships between population size and land area needed. This is especially true for senior colleges and universities, and for private schools because they have few, if any, state standards applicable to land area. Public Students data come from public school districts and private education providers.
