ABSTRACT

This selection is the final chapter of de Soto’s, The Mystery of Capital. It contains his concluding thoughts on the critical importance to economic development and the capitalist system of enforceable, formal property rights for the lower classes in areas such as Latin America. He looks into the early work of Marx, comments on its relevance in today’s economy, and argues that there is now “enough evidence to make substantial progress in development.” Finally, he concludes with a discussion of the inequitable nature of capitalism in developing nations, but notes that it is “the only game in town.”
