ABSTRACT

This chapter examines specific parking facilities in terms of various parking performance indicators and management strategies. It describes various features that indicate good management and potential ways to improve management. Parking is free to restaurant and shop patrons and to certain employees, and available to others for a fee. This lot has most of the positive attributes of the previous example plus priced parking available to motorists who do not qualify for free parking. Poorly managed parking facility is excessively large, with most parking spaces unoccupied on most days. It has minimal landscaping and no pedestrian amenities. Due to its excessive size and poor condition, it is unattractive and unpleasant for pedestrian use. Parking spaces are located in the building courtyard, providing a high level of security and allowing the facility to serve as a meeting space and children's play area. Some cities require that parking structures incorporate ground-floor retail and other design details to enhance the streetscape.
