ABSTRACT

This chapter offers various types of parking management programs. Reducing parking requirements can increase commercial building profitability. Because more land is often devoted to parking than to the building footprint, a small reduction in parking requirements allows a large increase in the amount of building space that can be developed on a given parcel of land. Various strategies can reduce the amount of parking required at a worksite. The unused parking spaces can be leased or rented, or the land can be used for new buildings or other activities. Parking management is common in large cities. Good examples include Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, but some smaller cities and towns are also implementing creative programs as part of their efforts to redevelop their downtowns and older neighborhoods. Downtown Ashland, Oregon, is a commercial center and tourist attraction. City’s downtown is a major destination and activity center, particularly during the summer tourist season.
