ABSTRACT

Passages can be categorized into four distinct types: alleys, mews, paseos, and

arcades. The alley (also called a lane) is a narrow street that accommodates

service and auto traffic. Pedestrians share the vehicular right-of-way. Alleys

typically provide a service access for at least part of the day. If traffic is

redirected, alleys can also accommodate more pedestrian-oriented activities,

such as outdoor dining and retail. A mews (also called a woonerf in Dutch)

typically accommodates pedestrian, bicycle, and automobile traffic. Its

sidewalks and curbs are level with the street; a material or pattern difference

between the street and sidewalk visually distinguishes the mews from the

street. Bollards are used to further demarcate pedestrian and vehicular zones.
