ABSTRACT

217In my Introduction, I cited the many paths to the common opinion that Papers on Technique was casual of purpose and quickly outdated. I threw in Freud’s own retrospective belittling comments as though they were just some of the many. The reader might have wanted to stop me there, and say: “How can you casually dismiss the author’s own dismissal? Who would know better than the author whether he was laying a foundation for analytic treatment or merely patching up a trivial misunderstanding of the moment?”
