ABSTRACT

Quantitative measurements, making use of scores and statistics, have limited application for coaches, because there is still an underlying story, and even multiple stories, that we can learn from. Qualitative research can give us more insight into how coaching works and why. We can benefit from the experiences of others, and learn that we can approach our work professionally in a variety of different ways, that we can view it from many different perspectives, and that we then still can find an important degree of agreement. There are surprising similarities between the stories that coachees and coaches tell about a session they have experienced together, but there are also clear differences. There are multiple perspectives on coaching, both from within ourselves as coaches, and from our coachees and the sponsors. It is important to be open to those different stories about the same experience in coaching.
