ABSTRACT

Chris, having spent many decades in higher education assessment leadership, has now honed his skill as an assessment leader. He is widely known as a leader in assessment at his institution, the profession, and his local and professional communities. Lately, many young assessment professionals have contacted him for career advice. Janet, a young higher education assessment graduate student at his campus and a staff member in one of the offices reporting to Chris, has asked to interview Chris to discuss his leadership style. She has also asked what leadership style Chris would suggest a young assessment professional adopt. Chris takes a moment to reflect on this question, noting the importance of a balanced approach to assessment technique and leadership. He reflects back across his career and recognizes that in addition to recommending sound methods for assessment, the work Chris has really done has been cultural in nature. He wonders how he can discuss the ideas of cultural transformation with Janet and other assessment professionals considering these same concepts.
