ABSTRACT

The anti-feminist satiric agenda often relies on images of female incoherence and its consequences, particularly the masculine impotence that must inevitably result from the blurring of traditionally defined gender identities and roles, as evident in the cartoon depictions of a crossed-dressed Hillary Clinton and an emasculated Bill Clinton. The anti-feminist satirist, whose ultimate purpose is to reinforce the traditional gender hierarchy and empower masculine identity, as Felicity Nussbaum posits, the Lesbian typology is an especially useful activistic tool, one with the explicit or implied intent to motivate masculine readers to protect their personal and social relevance from gender nonconformists. The myth of satires against women includes the myth that women create chaos, and the imposition of form on formlessness provides meaning and rationality when the fear of meaninglessness and insanity arises. Anti-feminist satire, replete with these kinds of misogynistic typologies, has a long and unpleasant literary provenance.
