ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on the theme of social stratification in science: academic performance stratification, academic salary stratification, academic power stratification, international research stratification, academic role stratification, and academic age stratification. It explores how academics operationalize the issues in terms of academia's attractiveness as profession, career, and workplace. The book discusses the increasing intensity of performance stratification within the academic profession. The multiple dimensions of social stratification in science have several policy implications. The book reveals a powerful trend of cross-generation differentiation. It also explores intergenerational and cross-national patterns in the teaching–research divide. The book seeks to demonstrate the importance of the academic profession as the core of the academic enterprise embedded in institutions and national systems. It examines Europe's academic professions from a sociology of science perspective based on the most comprehensive cross-national dataset currently available.
