ABSTRACT

Content on the theme of cooking is an integral part of the media landscape leading to the democratization and the dissemination of culinary practices amongst today’s contemporary societies through popular TV shows, such as MasterChef or a more trans-media approach liking different media. The media coverage of the culinary is marked by the different historical phases that highlight the evolution of culinary TV programs, the representation of cooking activities as well as food consumption patterns amongst Western food cultures. The chapter looks at successful French culinary programs led and produced by French iconic culinary journalist and food critic Julie Andrieu to show how these shows are constructed in a way to provide viewers with closeness, simplicity, and the pleasure of cooking and developing a healthy approach to food. Culinary TV programs and food channels can also be considered from a sociological perspective as an object that is disconnected from reality, since they are paradoxical or ambiguous.
