ABSTRACT

The way a person sees their life history, particularly their view of the difficult phases and experiences, is crucial for their attitude towards the present and future, and thus for their own resilience. A person's own life history can be described either in great detail or in a very rudimentary form. One insight that people usually have during workshops is that the most distressing periods in their life often also contained the most profound insights and lessons for them. A manager's attitude or inner stance is decisive for the way in which he deals with stressful situations. To question existing comfort zones and proven recipes for success is always an individual decision. Etienne Van der Walt therefore advocates a lifestyle characterised by regular movement. The two different lifestyles are an active one, according to the definition of van der Walt, and a more sedentary one like many managers have.
