ABSTRACT

Somatic Experiential Therapy is very effective in treating addicts and especially those with shock or attachment trauma. For trauma survivors and addicts, the process of getting in touch with their bodies is quite a challenge. Therefore, the use of roles and props allows the individual to process issues that would be too dysregulating", with space, by first taking it outside the body. Two of the most important pieces to focus on with participants are Resourcing and using Somatic Empathy with the therapist as a vehicle of change. Resourcing is a way to regulate the dysregulated nervous system. This is where experiential techniques including; props, roles, art, and music are very effective. This chapter also explores the DBT skill of Describe, being able to focus on our feelings and describe them without being judgmental.
