ABSTRACT

All life- saving modes are designed to return a person to safety. If there is not a return of true safety, there is a restriction or limitation in embodiment. Some of the most common forms of restriction in embodiment are retreating into the thinking brain, disassociation, numbing out of body awareness, and chronic muscular and connective tissue tension patterns. All of these forms of trauma response can be renegotiated through bodywork and embodiment techniques. This chapter contains experiential bodywork exercises to help regulate the emotional distress and sweeping emotions from taking over the nervous system. It also teaches the DBT skill of Alternative Rebellion which gives people with addictions an alternative way to rebel without abusing drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, shopping, etc.
