ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the challenges associated with teaching Cantonese literacy as part of a general education foreign language requirement at Brigham Young University (BYU), a large private university with a long tradition of teaching multiple foreign languages. After a discussion of the general education foreign language requirements, this chapter provides a brief history of Cantonese language instruction at BYU. This is followed by a discussion of Cantonese literacy, including the unique nature of Hong Kong Chinese, the challenges of teaching Cantonese literacy, Cantonese-learning materials, and finally suggests strategies for teaching Cantonese literacy.
