ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 specifically focuses on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and associated conditions that can cause bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. These are now considered diseases of mind-gut interaction. Treatment of IBS is holistic, with specific medications for each subtype as well as a focus on emotional well being. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is common among those with IBS and may need evaluation and treatment to ameliorate symptoms. While historically treated with rifaximin, the use of evidence-based herbal supplements may be preferable. I feel the FODMAP diet is too restrictive for those with an eating disorder history. Pelvic floor dysfunction may arise from various causes in those with eating disorders and can be diagnosed by anorectal manometry. Alternatively, an experienced physical therapist can diagnose and treat, causing significant improvement in symptoms. The gut microbiota refers to the bacteria that healthily colonize our gastrointestinal tract. New research on the symbiotic relationship we share with our gut bacteria shows some remarkable health associations. While there is a role for the prescription of probiotics, more research is needed.
