ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 sets out to map the field of video game discourse analysis, delineating its theoretical and methodological scope in relation to relevant areas of investigation, such as ludonarratology. It explains why ludonarratology is a useful frame for game studies and examines how video game and gamer discourse in the form of the players’ experience are interlinked and reinforcing each other in the process of video gameplay. A brief overview of the research methods adopted to analyse the players’ experience is provided. The constructive and interpretative nature of the players’ experience is noted and the role of the players’ experience in the development of the theoretical model underscored. The chapter ends by explaining the logic behind the conceptualisation and structure of the book and outline individual chapters.
