ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the theoretical concepts of colonisation and colonialism, and presents the book’s central questions: the relationships between legal traditions, colonial policies and aboriginal land tenure, as played out in Taiwan under the respective administrations of Qing and Japan, each with a different legal system, adopting different colonial policies and having different effects on aboriginal land tenure.
