ABSTRACT
Given the ways in which Australia’s racialized identity inhibited its relationship with India, Canadian liberal internationalist outreach provides a crucial counterpoint. Canada exhibited a pluralist-yet-hierarchical approach to the Anglosphere, which briefly animated a productive relationship with India. At a time in which all other India-Anglosphere relationships were weak and struggled under the weight of the Cold War and decolonization, Canada and India were able to develop what was thought of as a ‘special relationship’. Canada’s perception of India, even despite being kinder than Australia’s, still caused problems by continually overhyping the extent to which the two states saw world order in the same way.
