ABSTRACT

A differentiated classroom requires a different consideration of space. There are a variety of ways to build a schedule in a differentiated classroom. If students are in tiered groups based on readiness, they should have access to text materials, such as books and articles that are written at different levels. Print materials for different levels are available for purchase, but there are free options available online. When students are learning, there are clear routines that provide a sense of stability and predictability in the midst of activity. Routines are essential in a differentiated classroom, as students will be transitioning to different activities. Flexible groupings are foundational to a differentiated classroom. One of the common challenges in managing any classroom, especially one that is differentiated, is how to handle students who are absent.
