ABSTRACT

The line producer, assistant director(s), unit production manager, and Director of Photography (DP) are also there to take unnecessary burdens from the director, whose entire energies must lie with the cast and the DP. In the United States, where the producer’s role is primarily fiscal and logistical, the production department is headed by the producer. Producers of experience and taste are also important arbiters of the film’s artistic progress, especially when they maintain some distance on day-to-day production. In an interior setup, lighting and camera position take precedence, so the sound recordist is expected to position mikes without their being seen or causing shadows, yet capture pristine sound quality. In general, camera crew members need an enthusiastic visual sensibility and a background in photography or fine art. The best camera people seem to be equable in temperament, knowledgeable, and resourceful, and able to enjoy the challenge of intransigent technical and logistical problems.
