ABSTRACT

Artists must have recordings and live performance of the music from the recordings as the foundation of their career. The strength of full-service record labels has traditionally been their ability to market recordings and distribute them through the wholesale and retail markets. Income from the sale and streaming of recordings is a major revenue source for the artist, and it's important that the artist manager understands how the process works and how it will benefit their artists. Labels also seek producers who have their own marquee value, especially to terrestrial radio programmers as well as with the consumer. A 360 recording contract is one that gives the record label a portion of an artist's earnings beyond music sales and streaming income. There are two kinds of "charts" that the manager should understand—sales charts and airplay charts. College radio in recent years has picked up considerable competition from the Internet as a source for filtering new and interesting music.
