ABSTRACT

The career plan for each artist on a manager's client list provides an ongoing guide for both the manager and the artist. The artist is the central part of the business relationship, which actually defines the artist as a branded product in the traditional way of viewing commercial products. The biography should be created by a third-party professional, such as a publicist, and it should be relatively inexpensive to produce. Students of business management will recognize this as a SWOT analysis, which creates an analysis of the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats of the artist. For every career plan, the manager should evaluate and disclose to the artist any potential conflicts of interest. The goals must be realistic and deliverable and the timelines for achievement must be realistic given everything else that is happening to support the artist's career. The artist career plan must assume there will differences between a career in its prime and a mature career.
