ABSTRACT

From charity to philanthropy. This chapter discusses three things. The first is the shift from charity to philanthropy in the US, explaining the difference between the two and introducing the reader to the concept of bureaucratized benevolence, and why it was felt by many of that day that this shift was necessary. From there, it moves to discuss the contributions made by theretofore marginalized groups, specifically blacks and women. The chapter concludes by presenting the distinct contributions Catholic and Jewish immigrants made to charitable thought and practice in America.
