ABSTRACT

Pottery is perhaps the most ubiquitous artifact found at most archaeological sites. It has been used to interpret characteristics such as chronology, activity, ritual, economy, trade, and artistic interpretation. It is considered one of the earliest of the manufactured materials that humankind produced and one that facilitated the growth of other industries, such as agriculture and food production. Glass was initially considered a precious stone, even if artificial. Glass was used as jewelry, made into vessels, and used as inlay on boxes and statues. As a prized commodity, glass as a finished product and raw material was traded throughout the ancient world. This chapter will discuss pottery and glass including raw materials and manufacturing techniques.
