ABSTRACT

The end of coaching is often discussed at its outset: by working with the coach, the coachee will learn a range of self-help skills to use both in and between the sessions in order to become their own coach, and will terminate coaching in that capacity. Endings in cognitive behavioural coaching (CBC) are usually straightforward if certain conditions have been met. The coachee can be asked to summarize any valuable lessons they learnt in coaching. Occasionally, when a coachee has reached the end of their agreed number of sessions and, by their own estimation, has made good progress in achieving some of their goals, they nevertheless may harbour some doubts about actually leaving coaching. Another issue to deal with in the last session is the possibility of a setback or relapse. Coachees need to remember that setbacks and relapses are incidents in the course of one's progress, not its whole story.
