ABSTRACT
The focus of this chapter is on the self-identification of The Salvation Army as both Wesleyan and Holiness considered through the emphases of its most significant holiness advocates beginning with the founders William and Catherine Booth. The role played by The Salvation Army in the Australian national story will also be investigated, primarily through an investigation of the visits of General William Booth during the formative years surrounding Federation (1899–1902). The influential holiness teachings of Samuel Logan Brengle and Frederick Coutts are discussed as well as the holiness emphases of Australian Salvation Army leaders.
