ABSTRACT

Traditional ethics programs encountered at college or law school tend to focus on either the difference between right and wrong or, alternatively, what causes individuals to engage in unethical behavior. This chapter examines how the Giving Voice to Values (GVV) framework can be utilized to address common ethical situations in the legal industry. Students need, and are demanding, a more tangible connection between what they learn in the classroom and its relationship to their future work. Similarly, employers are demanding that prospective employees have skills beyond simply mastering academic content. There are several reasons why the GVV framework is useful to students, legal practitioners, and employers. Doing business in the 21st century is different from doing business in previous time periods in several critical ways. The GVV framework is particularly vital to the legal industry. Lawyers now rank as the least trustworthy of occupations.
