ABSTRACT

The Giving Voice to Values (GVV) framework makes an important distinction between ethics and values. Ethics are rules-based and externally imposed. Values are personal and internally held. By focusing on values, the GVV framework allows individuals to speak from a self-motivated, aspirational stance rather than an obligatory position imposed from the outside. Values conflicts are an integral and natural extension of life. Conflicts can arise for many reasons including differences in perceptions, in the amount of information, and in the quality of information. The term "voice" is not confined to verbally stating concerns. Rather than being construed literally, the term is meant to signify a broader range of actions. "Voice" also involves taking the needs, desires, and emotional investments of others into consideration. As used in the GVV framework, the term pre-scripting means to develop persuasive arguments in advance for responding to common reactions and rationalizations.
