ABSTRACT

This chapter shows what sources and influences are, discusses ways to research and organize, examines the concept of privilege and analyzes all five senses as they relate to sources and influences. Several of the artist interviews in the appendix refer to wide-ranging sources and influences. Neil Bender's interview in the appendix details not only the way an artist can rely on their sketchbooks during the course of daily activities, but also how those casual sketches and collections of images might become important parts of other works. Finding and identifying sources and influences is a fluid and ever-changing type of research. By better understanding privileges and differences, people can more descriptively and accurately describe own sources to others. People with privilege are often so used to it that they don't immediately recognize the benefit until it's pointed out to them.
