ABSTRACT

Europe: Baku Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline transports oil from the Caspian Basin in Azerbaijan, through Georgia and Turkey to the port of Ceyhan on the Mediterranean coast, a distance of 1768 km. The pipeline corridor contains numerous prehistoric and historic sites, as the line traverses territory of ancient trade routes. The region had not been systematically surveyed, and research in Azerbaijan and Georgia had been hindered by decades of isolation that affected the capacity for survey, excavation, and analysis (BP Caspian, 2014; Smithsonian Institution, 2011).
