ABSTRACT

Lace chapes or tags are a common find in the later medieval period, being used to encase the ends of laces of leather or textile, and reflecting changing trends in fashion from the mid-14th century onwards (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 284). Indeed, paintings and manuscripts which illustrate their uses, for example, for lacing doublet and hose, and bodices, provide an explanation for the large quantities that have been found on archaeological sites (Margeson 1993, 22).
