ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a general overview of the pottery, the significant fabrics, functional diversity, possible sources for the pottery and chronological trends. It describes the pottery information in relation to the stratigraphy and taphonomy for the 1996 excavation and the 1998 excavations. The chapter discusses the two excavations and sets the ceramics within the wider context of pottery assemblages of the Welsh Marches and castles within the West Midlands. The medieval fabrics have been mainly catalogued using a hierarchical alpha-numeric system. Wigmore 1996 contained a good stratigraphic sequence from the construction of the castle through to the Civil War destruction and the castle's subsequent abandonment. There is some residuality but in general there is good reason to have confidence in the ceramic sequence. Two areas were excavated in three campaigns: one in 1996 and two in 1998.
