ABSTRACT

The ceramic building material (CBM) from Wigmore Castle was examined by context, with material separated into different fabrics and forms, and further grouped by the presence of sooting, glaze, mortar and amount of abrasion on fragments. Photographs of the CBM fabrics are shown in Plates 6 and 7. The data are laid out by 1996 excavation, the area outside the East Tower and the fills within the East Tower and also include the small amount of unstratified material. Floor tile and brick Fabric LZ05 a brick and floor tile fabric. Floor tiles are the most common form found in the assemblage, with a small quantity of brick, neither in quantities suggesting in situ deposits. The ratios of ridge tile to flat tile fragments are unusual, especially the contrast with the minimum number estimates with weights and number of fragments. The most numerous stone amongst the assemblage is a fine-grained sandstone from the Raglan Mudstone formation of the Old Red Sandstone.
