ABSTRACT

Lar región más transparente was Gregorio López y Fuentes' first novel he was already well established in Mexico City's social and literary communities, both as the son of a diplomat and as the author of two collections of short stories. Fuentes' pre-existing status meant that his fellow authors and peers were quick to respond to the novel's publication. Critical acclaim was accompanied by commercial success as the first edition of Lar región más transparente sold out within days, an event which Alfonso Rangel Guerra described as 'algo insólito en la historia de las letras Mexicanas'. Sales of the novel would have been boosted by positive reviews but even more so by the controversy which surrounded the novel. Lar región más transparente also enjoyed all the benefits associated with being published by one of the country's leading publishers, the Fondo de Cultura Económica (FCE).
